Russel Sturges, Slayton

Russel Miles Sturges, 85, of Slayton, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 1991 at Murray County Memorial Hospital, Slayton.

Born May 16, 1906, in Mason Township, Murray County, he was the son of Miles and Leila Minor Sturges. He married Marian Irene Nelsen March 5, 1932, in Slayton.

He attended school at Slayton. After marriage he farmed for a couple years and drove truck. He then began employment with Currie Block and Tile where he worked for nearly 40 years. In 1984 they moved to Slayton. He entered Slayton Manor Nursing Home May 13.

Surviving are his wife; five sons, Dean Sturges, Biloxi, Miss., David Sturges, Valparaiso, Ind., Leroy Sturges, Ames, Iowa, Jerry Sturges, Parker, Colo., and Terry Sturges, Brooklyn Park; one daughter, Mrs. Bonnie (Louis) Noding, Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Dorothy York, Bend, Ore.; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church, Slayton. Hustad-Totzke is in charge of arrangements.

The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church, Slayton, with the Rev. Randy Skow-Anderson and the Rev. Laurie Skow-Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Westbrook Cemetery, Westbrook.

Russell Sturges

Russel Miles Sturges was born on May 16, 1906 in Mason Township, Murray County, Minnesota to Miles and Leila Minor Sturges. He lived in Slayton where he attended school, all but a couple of years when they lived at Monticello. On March 5, 1932 he and Marian Irene Nelsen were married at Slayton and farmed for a few years, then he trucked for a few years before going to work at Currie Block and Tile where he worked for almost 40 years. They lived in Currie from 1945 to 1984 when he retired and they moved into Westside Apartments in Slayton. Russell was a resident of Slayton Manor Nursing Home since May 13, 1991 and passed away after a short illness, at the Murray County Memorial Hospital on August 20, 1991 at the age of 85. He enjoyed fishing, loved trains and liked the many activities and living at Westside.

Survivors included his wife, Irene of Slayton, MN; six children and their spouses: Dean and Vera Sturges of Biloxi, MI; Bonnie and Louis Noding of Phoenix, AZ; David and Judy Sturges of Valparaiso, IN; Leroy and Sue Sturges of Ames, IA; Jerry and Jennifer Sturges of Parker, CO; and Terry and Jeane Sturges of Brooklyn Park, MN; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Sturges York of Bend, OR. He is precede in death by his parents, sisters Opal Hanno and Fay Holmbeck, brothers, Marvin and Ralph, and grandson Michael Sturges.

Memorial service was at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on Friday, August 23, 1991 at 11:00 am with the Revs. Randy and Laurie Skow-Anderson. The organist was Marian Oberman. Interment at Westbrook Cemetery in Westbrook, Minnesota.
