Irene Sturges was born on October 9, 1911 in Murray County, MN to Ned and Anna Busk Nelsen. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1928. On March 5, 1932 she and Russell Sturges were married at Slayton. They farmed for a few years before moving to Currie, MN where they lived until 1984. They retired and moved into Westside Apartments in Slayton. Russell died on August 20, 1991 and Irene continued living in Slayton. Due to failing health, she has been a resident of Westbrook Good Samaritan since December 1994 and passed away there on January 15, 1995 at the age of 83. Irene was a member of Christ Lutheran Church [Slayton, Minnesota]. She belonged to the Currie Legion Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Southwest Minnesota Senior Federation. She enjoyed doing crafts, volunteer work, and playing cards as favorite pastimes.
Survivors included her six children and their spouse: Dean and Vera Sturges of Biloxi, MS; Bonnie and Louis Noding of Phoenix, AZ; David and Judy Sturges of Valparaiso, IN; Leroy and Sue Sturges of Ames, IA; Jerry and Jennifer Sturges of Parker, CO; and Terry and Jeane Sturges of Brooklyn Park, MN; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four brothers, six sisters and their spouses: Amy Benson, Ethel Cohrs, Leslie and Lou Nelsen, Vivian and Albert Schauer, Lloyd and Ellen Nelsen, Vera Larson, all of Westbrook, MN, Donald and Gladys Nelsen of Texas, Nina and Bernard Franz of Minneapolis, MN, Ardys Dennis of Saltillo, Texas, James and Donna Nelsen of St. Paul, MN. She is preceded in death by her husband, Russell, grandson, Michael Sturges, and a sister, Elizabeth Anne.
