A BRIEF LIFE HISTORY
Vivian Christine (Nelsen) Schauer was born, the fifth child to Ned and Anna (Busk) Nelsen on the family farm in Des Moines River Township, Murray County, Minnesota on April 26, 1913. As a young girl, she attended country school and two years of Westbrook High School. She worked as a hired girl to local families and at the Fairway Store in Westbrook.
On December 14, 1937 she was united in marriage to Albert Schauer. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Schauer farmed in the Westbrook area. They became the parents of five children.
In 1948 the family moved to a farm near Storden and resided there until 1970 when Albert and Vivian moved to Windom, where she became employed at the Toro Company. After retiring, Vivian remained busy with her hobbies … crocheting, gardening, and reading. They spent several winters in Florida. She was a member of the Windom AARP Club and the American Lutheran Church.
In 1994 she moved to an apartment in Westbrook. There she continued to be active in the Sunset Club, Senior Citizens and Trinity Lutheran Church.
On Saturday, December 27, 1997, she and her daughter, Rachel Hansen, were traveling to Windom to visit with her husband, Albert, who was a resident of the Sogge Memorial Center, when they were involved in an automobile collision south of Storden. She and her daughter both died as a result of injuries suffered in that collision. At the time of Vivian’s death, she was 84 years, 8 months, and 1 day old.
Besides her daughter, Rachel, she was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Dennis Hansen, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Irene.
Vivian is survived by her husband, Albert Schauer, of Windom, her children and their spouses: Larry and Judy Schauer of Storden; Linda and Dennis Karow of Prior Lake, MN; Chuck Schauer of St. Petersburg, FL; and Kathy Ziller of Lakeville, MN; her son-in-law, Merlin Hansen of Westbrook, MN; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. She is also survived by Joyce Schauer of St. Petersburg, FL; five sisters: Amy Benson, Ethel Cohrs and Vera Larson of Westbrook, MN; Mrs. Bernard Franz of Crystal, MN and Ardys Dennis of Saltillo, TX; four brothers: Leslie and Lloyd Nelsen of Westbrook; Donald Nelsen of Alamo, TX; and James Nelsen of Roseville, MN; and a sister-in-law, Susie Olson of Fort Dodge, IA.
