Emilie Henrietta Bethke
Wife of Louis August Noding, Sr.

Emilie Bethke, daughter of August Bethke and his wife Anna Marquardt, was born February 17, 1857 at the Colonie Gruenberg, Parish Klien Sittno, Polen, Germany.

Her baptism by Rev. Walters, took place on March 2, 1857. She attended public school and after confirmation instruction was confirmed at Schubin near Nakel in 1871.

In 1881 she came to America, York County, Nebraska. In 1882, she was united in marriage of Louis August Noding who immigrated from Germany, Lichtenhagen in the province of Hannover. Marriage was performed on June 25, 1882 by Rev. Gottfried Endres of Beavercreek, Nebraska.

In 1883, they moved to North Dakota near Ellendale to homestead. After staying eight years they moved to Minnesota in 1891 to live south of Westbrook, in Rosehill Townsihp, Cottonwood County.

Ten children were born to this union of whom four died in early infancy. The remaining children were Emilie (Mrs. William Sell); Helana (Mrs. John Strodtman); Marie (Mrs. David Engler); Minnie (Mrs. Albert Arnold); Louis, H.R., and Otto Noding.

Emilie was widowed August 17, 1921 when her husband died while visiting their daughter, Minnie Arnold, in North Dakota. Emilie Bethke Noding lived her life on the homestead south of Westbrook, Minnesota. When her son, Otto, married Minnie Schmidt, he brought his bride home to live with his mother. They raised two children, Garnet (Mrs. Donald Fowler) and Vern.

The house was typical for the times, three rooms downstairs; kitchen, living room, and a bedroom; and two rooms upstairs. It was a wooden structure with outside door to crawl into cellar. No improvements were made on the house all of her lifetime.

Emilie Bethke Noding became so senile she could not be cared for in her home so she was taken to Springfield Old Peoples Home at Springfield, Minnesota on July 16, 1942. While there she fell and broke her hip and died of pneumonia Friday, April 9, 1943 at 4:00 p.m. at age 86 years.

She had two half brothers in Nebraska, forty grandchildren and forty-eight great-grandchildren.

Emilie's father died at an early age and her mother remarried to a Mr. Pohl. They had three boys, Ferdinand, Fred and Herman - her half-brothers.

Louis and Otto Noding of Westbrook, Minnesota.
