George Peter Frank was born Peter George Frank on 5 March 1842 at Kirchbeefurth, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany. He came to America in 1860 or 1861 at the age of 18 or 19 and located in Springfield, (Clark), Ohio.
Shortly after his arrival, Mr. Frank enlisted as a private in the Union forces and fought through the Civil War. He served with Company "H" of the 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 18 September 1861 to 5 January 1864. The unit was then reorganized at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, as the 8th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He served with this unit from 5 January 1864 until 30 July 1865. He was promoted to corporal on 11 May 1864 and honorably discharged on 30 July 1865 at Clarksburgh, West Virginia.
At his enlistment, Mr. Frank is described as a laborer, age 19, height 5 feet 4 inches, fair complexion, sandy (brown) hair, and blue eyes. While in the service he received several wounds and later (19 March 1880) filed for a pension. In the pension application, he described the events leading to his wounds as follows:
After the war, Mr. Frank returned to Springfield, (Clark), Ohio. On 8 October 1866 he became a naturalized citizen. No papers of Declaration of Intent were needed because of his military service. On 18 April 1869 he was married by Pastor L.H. Lorenz to Regina Honefinger. Nine children (7 boys and 2 girls) were born to this couple.
Mr. Frank used part of his bounty money from the Civil War to get into the retail grocery business (G.P. Frank & Co., a grocery and saloon at 115 West Main St., Springfield) with John Troutman. In the 1880's he lived at 102 N. Plum; from about 1887 to 1905, at 129 N. Race; and from about 1905 to 1925, at 315 N. Race, Springfield.
Mr Frank's wife Jennie was a lifetime resident of Springfield. She was a prominent member of the Zion Lutheran Church, and was counted one of its foremost workers. Jennie died at her home on 1 June 1908 of diabetus militus.
Mr Frank died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 2 May 1928 at the age of 86 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Patterson, 315 N. Race St., Springfield.
Mr. Frank was a member of the Zion Lutheran church and was the post chaplain of the Mitchell Post, GAR.
