History

Joseph JEFFERS was born on 20 August 1760 in New London County, Connecticut, the son of Joseph JEFFERS and Dorcas AMOS. His mother died when he was only five years old and he was taken in by the family of Colonel AGUR in Westfield, Massachusetts. He stayed with Col. AGUR until he was 15 years old at which time he enlisted in the Continental service.

Joseph JEFFERS joined in the army at Cambridge soon after the battle of Bunker Hill. He fought in the battles of Trenton and Princeton. In the summer of 1777 he was one of the detachment sent to Fort Stanwix (now Rome, N.Y.) which was hemmed in three weeks by British and Indians, under Co. ST. LEGER. He fought in the battle of Saratoga and spent the following winter with the army at Valley Forge. He was in the battle of Monmouth, N.J. and one of the first that scaled the walls of the fort at Stony Point, under Gen. WAYNE, which was carried at the point of the bayonet. Joseph JEFFERS left the army in 1780.

In 1782, at the age of 22, Joseph JEFFERS married Eunice GIDDINGS who was born on 13 December 1763 and was the daughter of James and Lois GIDDINGS. The family lived in New Lebanon, New York, and in Saratoga, New York until 1817 when the family moved to Pinckney, Lewis County, New York.

Joseph JEFFERS embraced religion at the age of 25 and became a member of the Baptist Church of which he continued a devoted and useful member through life. For nearly fifty years he officiated as Deacon with honor to himself and satisfaction to the church.

Joseph JEFFERS drew a pension under the act of Congress passed in 1818. He died in Pinckney, New York, on 28 June 1845. Eunice GIDDINGS died 25 July 1826.
