The Harphant Family

Thomas HARPHANT was born in England in January 1827. A blacksmith by trade, Mr. HARPHANT may have been married three times. In the 1860 census of Lafayette Village (Madison County) Ohio, there is a Thomas HARPHAN who is a blacksmith, age 32, born in England. Living with Thomas HARPHAN is Charlotte HARPHAN, a 30-year old female who was also born in England, and two children; Cate HARPHAN age 5, and George HARPHAN age 3.

In the 1880 census of the Village of Selma, Madison Township (Clark County) Ohio, there is a Thomas HARPIN who is a blacksmith, age 52, born in England. The wife in this family is listed as Margaret, age 29, born in Illinois, both parents born in Virginia. There are four children in the family; James B. age 8, Thomas L. age 5, Lucey L. age 4, and William A. age 1. For all four children the place of birth is given as Ohio, the father’s place of birth is given as England, and the mother’s place of birth is given as Illinois.

In the 1910 census, Thomas HARPHAN is listed as an inmate of the Madison County Infirmary, Union Township (Madison County) Ohio. His age is given as 73, born January 1827 in England. He is a naturalized citizen.


William Alfred HARPHANT was born in Clifton, Ohio, on 24 December 1877, the son of Thomas HARPHANT and Margaret HAYSLETT HARPHANT. He spent his entire life in or near the Clifton, Ohio, community. He had been a cream and poultryman and retired from the Sherman and White Co. in 1953 after 25 years of service. William HARPHANT was a member of the Cliffside Presbyterian Church and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He enlisted in Company B, Third Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. They were mustered into service at Columbus, Ohio, on 10 May 1898 by Captain C.M. Rockefeller (9th Infantry USA) and mustered out at Columbus, Ohio, on 16 October 1898 by Lieutenant C.D. Roberts (17th Infantry USA).

Viola HUFFMAN HARPHANT was born in Jamestown, Ohio, on 21 April 1883, the daughter of Jacob and Ameda (Anna) CLINE HUFFMAN. She had lived the last 33 years of her life in the Clifton, Ohio, community and was a member of the Clifton Presbyterian Church. Eleven children were born to William and Viola.

Viola HUFFMAN HARPHANT died on 6 June 1952 in the Fairborn Nursing Home (Fairborn, Ohio) of heart disease at the age of 69. She had been in failing health for about 12 years but her condition became critical in the final five months of her life. William Alfred HARPHANT died on 25 September 1964 in the Springfield City Hospital, Springfield, Ohio, of a ruptured appendix caused by cancer at the age of 86. Both are buried in the Clifton Cemetery just northwest of Clifton, Ohio.
