History

Edward William HAYSLETT was born in Rockbridge county, Virginia, on 12 April 1827, the son of William HAYSLETT and Sarah RICKETT HAYSLETT. Edward lived in Virginia until he was past 21 years of age. About 1848 or 1849 he came to Ohio and became engaged in farming in the vicinity of Jamestown. He was married in 1850 and not long afterward went to Springfield and there became engaged in wagon-making.

When the Civil War broke out, his patriotic impulses were stirred, and on 25 December 1861 he enlisted at Xenia for service in behalf of the Union (10th Battery of Ohio Artillery). On the muster-in roll, Edward is described as 5 ft 10 in. tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and his occupation was listed as farmer. He was soon transferred to Company E, 74th Ohio Regiment of Infantry organized at Columbus.

Military records indicate that Private HAYSLETT deserted from Camp Chase, Ohio, from 17 April 1862 until 11 June 1862 when he was admitted to the Post Hospital, Camp Chase, Ohio. The diagnosis was not stated and Edward was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability (the nature of disability was not stated - certificate not on file) at Columbus, Ohio, 16 June 1862. The charge of desertion was removed from his record on 6 August 1886 under provisions of the Act of Congress approved 5 July 1884.

Upon the completion of his military service, Mr. HAYSLETT resumed his trade, setting up an establishment at Clifton, Ohio, but presently disposed of his interest there and moved to Illinois where he remained but a short time. After coming back to Greene county (Ohio), he made one more trip to Illinois and remained there until 1877 when he again located at Clifton (Ohio) and resumed his wagon-making industry. He spent the rest of his life in Clifton. Mr. HAYSLETT was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and by political persuasion was a Republican.

Mr. HAYSLETT was twice married. In 1850, not long after coming to Greene County, Ohio, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth MORRIS who was born in Virginia about 1824. To that union were born six children, two of whom died in early youth. The others were Margaret (who died in the 1890's), William A., Henry H., and Madison (who died before 1924). Elizabeth MORRIS HAYSLETT died on 18 August 1867 at the age of 43 (of consumption).

On 17 April 1877, Mr. HAYSLETT married Mrs. Cynthia A. (HOUSE) WAGNER, widow of George WAGNER who was born about 1846 in Ohio. Cynthia's first marriage was solemnized in April 1864. To this second union four children were born: Francis Marion born 18 May 1878, Robert Elder born 24 July 1880, Ole Bull born 3 April 1882, and Jennie Lind born 9 November 1884.

Edward William HAYSLETT died of pulmonary ademia on 17 January 1916 at the age of 88. Cynthia died 8 years later on 3 December 1924 while on a visit at the home of her daughter in Greenfield. She was 78 at the time of her death. Both Edward and Cynthia are buried in the Clifton Cemetery just northwest of Clifton, Ohio.
