History

William Richard MINOR was born 13 February 1860 at Brooklyn, Green Lake County, Wisconsin, to Oliver Porter and Helen (DENT) MINOR. The family is listed in the census for Brooklyn, Wisconsin, in 1860 and 1870. William moved with his family to Diamond Township, Cherokee County, Iowa, in 1871. In the 1880 census of Cherokee County, William, age 20, is still listed with his parents -- no occupation is given.

Josephine Kenah HILLS was born 5 September 1864 at Beaver Dam, Dodge County, Wisconsin, to Henry Algernon and Mary Abigail (WHEELOCK) HILLS. Kenah is listed with Henry and Mary in the census for Calamus, Dodge County, Wisconsin, in 1870 and 1880.

The MINOR farm in Cherokee county was very near the farm of Howard BOYLAN who was a very close friend of both the HILLS' and the MINOR's. On 3 February 1884, Kenah and William were married. In the Iowa state census of 1885, William and Kenah are listed as farming the Northwest 1/4, Northeast 1/4 of Section 5, Diamond Township (Town 90 North, Range 39 West) of Cherokee County. William's parents, Oliver and Helen (DENT) MINOR, are listed as farming the Southeast 1/4, Northeast 1/4 of the same section.

About 1887 William and Kenah moved to Canton, Lincoln County, South Dakota. Shortly thereafter, Kenah began suffering from consumption (tuberculosis) and died of it 24 July 1894 at Canton. Kenah's body was returned to Iowa and buried in the Aurelia cemetery at Aurelia, Cherokee County, Iowa.

After Kenah's death, William moved back to Iowa and in the Iowa state census of 1895 he is listed with his mother Helen 61, brother Irvin 42, sister Mary 31, and five children (Lorenzo 10, Lelia L. 9, Howard 6, all born in Cherokee County, Iowa, and Hazel 4, Daisy 4, both born in South Dakota) in Diamond Township of Cherokee County. Helen MINOR's religion is listed as Presbyterian while that of Irvin, Mary, and William is listed as Baptist.

On 17 March 1897 William married Cynthia M. WHITMAN, age 20, who was born in Cherokee County, Iowa, May 1877, to James and Elizabeth (NELSON) WHITMAN. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Minnesota and are listed in Mason Township of Murray County in the 1900 census. William and Cynthia have an additional child in this census, William, born January 1898 in Minnesota.

William Richard MINOR died 29 March 1936 in Mason Township, Murray County, Minnesota. He is buried in the Slayton cemetery just north of town.
