Miles William STURGES was born 4 November 1880 at Canada Corners, (Kane), Illinois, to Robert E. and Barbara Ellen (BRITTON) STURGES. Canada Corners was later known as Compton and is presently known as Lily Lake. Miles' parents, his three older sisters - Viola 5, Susan Ellen 3, and Luci 2 - and his older brother - Willis 6/12 - show up on the 1880 census for Compton Township, (Kane), Illinois, but of course Miles wasn't born until five months later.
Presumably, Miles moved with his parents to Kankakee, Illinois, where his younger brother Harrison was born in Feb. 1884; then back to Kansas where Bertha was born March 1886; then to Chicago, Illinois, where Robert was born August 1888; then to Iowa where Elizabeth was born October 1894; and finally to Minnesota where Charles was born March 1899. However, Miles was not listed at home when his parents were recorded in the 1900 census of Mason Township, (Murray County), Minnesota. Nor does Miles show up in the 1900 Soundex for Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas, or Iowa.
Leila (Lelia) Loretta MINOR was born 25 October 1885 at Aurelia, (Cherokee County), Iowa, to Miles Richard and Josephine Kenah (HILLS), MINOR. Her family moved to Canton, (Lincoln County), South Dakota, about 1888 or 1889 and remained there until the death of her mother in 1894. In the Iowa 1895 census, Leila and her father were living with her grandmother, Helen MINOR, in Diamond Township, (Cherokee County), Iowa. In 1900, Leila was living with her father and stepmother, Cynthia M. WHITMAN, in Mason Township, (Murray County), Minnesota.
Miles W. STURGES and Leila MINER took out a marriage license 31 May 1904 and were married on 7 June 1904 at Mr. MINOR's home in Currie, (Murray), Minnesota. Rev. W. H. Wood, Minister of the Presbyterian church performed the ceremony; Bertha E. STURGES and Lorenzo P. MINER were witnesses. Both Miles and Leila were residents of Murray County at this time.
Miles was a farmer all of his adult life. For a time the couple lived at Monticello, Minnesota, but moved back to Murray County and farmed there from about 1909 until Miles death in 1939. Seven children were born to Miles and Leila; two of them, Ralph and Donald, died in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Mike Hanno, also preceded her father in death. (Both Opal and Faye died of complications arising from childbirth. Opal's organs quit functioning after childbirth and her body poisoned itself. Faye suffered a blood clot after childbirth which moved to her brain.)
On 10 October 1939 Miles bruised his right leg against a wagon wheel as he worked about his farm home three miles north of Slayton, Minnesota. Infection developed in what at first seemed a trivial injury and the disease progressed rapidly. He was taken to the Tracy hospital for treatment of the infection. Despite the efforts of the doctors, the infection became worse, spreading over much of the leg. Gangrene developed and in a desperate attempt to save Miles' life, the leg was amputated on 11 November 1939. Despite these efforts, Miles died 20 November 1939. Services were held at the Methodist church; burial was in the Slayton cemetery.
Shortly before his death, Miles filled out a form will leaving all of his property to his wife, Leila. His personal property totaled about $3,060.00 including 4 horses ($75), 23 cattle ($915), 18 hogs ($264), a John Deere tractor and plow ($465), an McC-D binder ($100), a John Deere corn picker ($75), a John Deere corn planter ($85), a John Deere endgate seeder ($17), a John Deere tractor cultivator ($65), a John Deere mower ($10), a four section Moline drag ($25), 2 wagons with racks ($50), 2 wagons without racks ($50), a manure spreader ($40), a sandwich elevator ($150) and miscellaneous other equipment. Miles did not own any land.
About 1943, Leila moved to 5525 SE Ogden St., Portland, (Multnomah), Oregon, where she lived for about 11 years. On 15 December 1954 Leila died of colon cancer. Leila was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland, Oregon.
