Albert O. Schauer was born in Dovray Township of Murray County, Minnesota, on December 14, 1907, to Reinhart and Magdelena Rupp Schauer. He was baptized and later confirmed in Emmanual Lutheran Church in Rosehill Township. He grew up in the Westbrook Cottonwood County) area, attending rural schools and graduated from Westbrook High School.
Vivian Christine Nelsen was born the fifth child to Ned and Anna (Busk) Nelsen on the family farm in Des Moines River Township, Murray County, Minnesota on April 26, 1913. As a young girl, she attended country school and two years of Westbrook High School. She worked as a hired girl to local families and at the Fairway Store in Westbrook.
On December 14, 1937 Vivian Nelsen and Albert Schauer were united in marriage. Following their marriage Vivian and Albert Schauer farmed in the Westbrook area. They became the parents of five children. In 1948 the family moved to a farm near Storden (Cottonwood County) where he continued to farm as well as sell springer heifers, feeder pigs, and seed corn. In 1970 they retired from farming and moved to Windom where Albert worked part-time at the Star Hatchery, continued his seed corn business, and also sold Conklin products, while Vivian became employed at the Toro Company
After retiring, Vivian remained busy with her hobbies - crocheting, gardening, and reading. Albert and Vivian were members of the American Lutheran Church and he enjoyed the activities of the Golden K Club as well as traveling and knitting stocking caps on a hand loom. They spent several winters in Florida. Vivian was a member of the Windom AARP Club and the American Lutheran Church.
As Albert’s health deteriorated, it became necessary for him to enter Sogge Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Windom in July of 1990. In 1994 Vivian moved to an apartment in Westbrook. There she continued to be active in the Sunset Club, Senior Citizens and Trinity Lutheran Church.
On Saturday, December 27, 1997, Vivian and her daughter, Rachel Hansen, were traveling to Windom to visit with her husband, Albert, when they were involved in an automobile collision south of Storden. She and her daughter both died as a result of injuries suffered in that collision. At the time of Vivian’s death, she was 84 years, 8 months, and 1 day old. On Monday, October 5, 1998, Albert died at the Sogge Center at the age of 90 years, 9 months, and 21 days.
