Robert E. STURGES was born 17 March 1850 in New York to William STURGES and Susan Elizabeth MOULDS. Barbara Ellen BRITTON was born 5 August 1855 in Indiana to G. H. BRITTON and (??) HUMBERT.
Robert and Barbara Ellen STURGES are listed in the 1880 census of Compton Town, (KANE), Illinois. Robert's occupation was given as farming. The birthplace of their three daughters (Viola 5, Susan Ellen 3, and Luci 2) are all listed as Illinois. The birthplace of their son (Willis M. 6/12) is given as Kansas. Their second son, Miles William was born in Canada Corners, Compton Township, (KANE), Illinois, on 4 November 1880.
In the 1900 census Robert and Barbara STURGES are listed in Mason Township, (Murray County), Minnesota. They had been married for 28 years (the census says 18, but probably means 28) and had 11 children, 10 of whom were still living at the time. Robert's occupation is again listed as farming. The birth place of their last five children was listed as Kansas (February 1884), Illinois (March 1886 and August 1888), Iowa (October 1894) and Minnesota (March 1899).
Robert E. STURGES died 12 July 1916 in Slayton, (Murray), Minnesota, and is buried in the Slayton Cemetery just north of town. At the time of his death, Robert owned a farm (Northeast half of Section 30, Township 107 North, Range 41 West - Mason Township, Murray County) valued at about $17,600 which was sold to Fred STAPLES. Also sold at auction were 4 horses ($380.00), 6 cows and 3 calves ($310.00), 1 bull ($43.00), 53 pigs ($516.00), and miscellaneous farm tools and implements totaling $1732.00. Most of the proceeds went to pay the mortgage of $13,675.00 on the land and equipment. In her husband's probate records, Barbara Ellen signed her name with an "X". (The 1910 census also indicates that she could neither read nor write.)
Barbara Ellen (BRITTON) STURGES died in Slayton on 29 November 1926. She is also buried in the Slayton cemetery just north of town.
