Russel Miles Sturges was born on May 16, 1906 in Mason Township, Murray County, Minnesota to Miles and Leila Minor Sturges. He lived in Slayton where he attended school, all but a couple of years when the family lived at Monticello. On March 5, 1932 he and Marian Irene Nelsen were married at Slayton.
Irene Sturges was born on October 9, 1911 in Murray County, Minnesota, the 4th of 12 children born to Ned and Anna Busk Nelsen. She grew up on the family farm (Des Moines River Township) and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1928.
The family farmed for a few years, then Russell trucked for a few years before going to work at Currie Block and Tile where he worked for almost 40 years. They lived in Currie from 1945 to 1984 when he retired and they moved into Westside Apartments in Slayton.
Russell was a resident of Slayton Manor Nursing Home since May 13, 1991, and passed away after a short illness, at the Murray County Memorial Hospital on August 20, 1991, at the age of 85. He enjoyed fishing, loved trains and liked the many activities and living at Westside.
After Rus’ death, Irene continued living in Slayton until December 1994 when due to failing health she moved into the Westbrook Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Irene passed away there on January 15, 1995 at the age of 83. Irene was a member of Christ Lutheran Church [Slayton, Minnesota]. She belonged to the Currie Legion Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Southwest Minnesota Senior Federation. She enjoyed doing crafts, volunteer work, and playing cards as favorite pastimes.
Russell and Irene are both buried in the Westbrook Cemetery (Westbrook, Cottonwood, Minnesota) just north of town.
